The Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Hub at SRKR Engineering College, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is committed to strengthening rural livelihoods through technology-led interventions. The Hub focuses on improving socio-economic outcomes among Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities in the surrounding villages by enabling skill development, reducing drudgery, enhancing income opportunities, and fostering entrepreneurship.
Drawing upon the technical expertise of the faculty and research teams at SRKR Engineering College, the STI Hub has designed and implemented three focused interventions in the domains of sustainable inland aquaculture, livestock feed enhancement, and resource recovery from aquaculture and agriculture. These interventions aim to increase productivity, reduce input costs, improve environmental sustainability, and create value-added products at the village level.
The villages of Peda Amiram, Jakkaram, and Kopalle in Kalla Block have been selected as pilot sites for field implementation. Key initiatives currently being demonstrated include duckweed-based pellet feed production for livestock, valorisation of underutilised cultured fish to enhance market value, and IoT-enabled water quality monitoring systems for improved aquaculture management. These technologies are being introduced through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to promote community participation, ownership, and skill transfer.
To ensure sustainability beyond the project period, the Hub is facilitating the formation of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and supporting the creation of local start-ups. These institutional mechanisms are intended to consolidate production, strengthen market linkages, and enable long-term community-led growth
Implementing simple technological solutions and organizing awareness and health camps to reduce physical strain, improve daily efficiency, and support community well-being
Empowering communities through targeted training programs.
Diversifying income sources by introducing sustainable practices and innovative aquaculture models.
Promoting small-scale enterprises by providing market linkage and building strong supply chains for startups to support sustainable and community-driven growth.
Documenting and integrating traditional wisdom with modern scientific practices for holistic development.
Duckweed based feed is developed as a nutritious, low cost supplement for poultry and cattle, reducing feed costs and improving overall productivity.
Value addition through fish processing and fish oil extraction by utilizing fish waste and low-value catch.
IoT enabled water quality monitoring improves farm efficiency, reduces manual effort and support data driven aquaculture management.
